Sonja founded H&S Resources Corporation in 2006, which evolved into Akata Global in 2019. That company provided comprehensive technical support in the areas of facility operations and maintenance services, including process planning and consulting, HVAC/R, plumbing, electrical, preventive maintenance, construction, and logistics for federal and state government agencies, military, and enterprise customers.

Earlier, Sonja was responsible for Safety Hazard Program Development and Safety Hazard Mitigation Support for over 400 employees at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. These contracts were valued at $750 million and provided engineering and related services to the Mechanical Systems Division and the Applied Engineering & Technology Directorate, as required for the design, development, fabrication, integration, testing, verification, and operation of space flight and ground system hardware and software.

From 1993 to 1996, Sonja worked at Sandia National Laboratories as a Safety Engineer. Her innovations in general safety programs and construction consultation were critical in helping revise the agency's Construction Safety Manual.

Sonja graduated with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology with a concentration in Occupational Safety & Health from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University, and a master's degree in Safety & Systems Management from the School of Engineering at the University of Southern California.
